General Information Accommodation Ratings To assist with the selection of your Pacific Islands accommodation we have created our own rating system allowing you to compare each property. These are personal ratings offered by our people from their own experience and should therefore be used as a guide only. These ratings may alter throughout the year due to a change of circumstances. Norfolk Island ratings however are based on the official Australian AAA Star Rating Scheme. Basic accommodation often with shared facilities and based more around an authentic local experience. Properties in this category have a limited range of facilities and services. Standard rooms, clean and comfortable usually with basic furnishings and private en suites. Typically most properties would include a restaurant and bar but have a limited range of other guest facilities and services. Moderate accommodation with a reasonable range of room facilities and comfortable standard, usually with a wide range of recreational and leisure activities available for guest enjoyment. Superior accommodation offering a high level of comfort in rooms with quality furnishings and fixtures. First class accommodation offering the very best quality services with detailed focus on high customer satisfaction. There tends to be greater attention to personalised service and a strong focus on the quality of food and beverages. A half star is noted when the level of service and facilities falls between two grades. Grading accommodation can be quite subjective and generally speaking the standard and services will be in line with the price paid. Please check with your travel consultant to ensure you get the accommodation that best fits your needs. Price Indicator: The price is provided as a guide only. It is in New Zealand dollars based on low season per person share twin pricing unless otherwise specified and is correct at the time of publishing. The actual price may differ to that indicated in this brochure due to currency fluctuations, special events or peak periods. Your travel consultant will quote you the actual price at time of booking. Child Policy: Please note bedding configuration varies between properties and in some cases with different room types within a property. Some hotels also offer family bonuses and specials. Your travel consultant will help you choose the hotel to best suit you and your family’s needs. Look out for our “gems” of information scattered throughout our Pacific Islands brochure.

Pacific Islands You’re a very lucky Kiwi. Why? Because as a New Zealander you have some of the most beautiful tropical Pacific Islands in the world at your fingertips. Destinations such as Samoa, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Niue, Tonga and Norfolk Island, amongst many others. These are places that some people can only dream about. Experience as much or as little as you like, relax, explore or re connect with loved ones. If you think that the Pacific Islands only offer white sand beaches, crystal blue waters and not a lot else, then think again! Let us take you on a journey to show you otherwise. We love the Pacific Islands and recommend you talk to your consultant to ensure you book the destination that best suits your needs at the best possible price. Each of these islands are unique in their own way so here are selection of tips to help make your decision easier.

6 Tips for your Holiday

3 / VIBRANT VANUATU Vanuatu offers diversity, culture, tradition and adventure, where natural beauty and unique experiences await you. Coral reefs, diving, active volcanoes and shipwrecks are all just waiting to be discovered. If diving is what you are travelling for, the best diving is found at Million Dollar Point located off the coast of Espiritu Santo. Here is where you’ll literally find a million dollars worth of discarded U.S. artillery.

1 / HIDDEN TREASURES IN SAMOA The treasured islands of Samoa offer a land where unspoilt beauty, customs, cultures and courtesies still exist. The friendliness of the locals will ensure you enjoy a very special holiday experience. Some people simply can’t relax on the beach or by the pool for too long without going stir crazy. Others like to mix up their holiday indulgence with a little activity between siestas. Fortunately, Samoa can offer the best of both worlds, from relaxation and pampering to adventure and excitement. We recommend hiring a car to explore some of Samoa’s hidden gems. There sure are a lot, but one of the best is Lalomanu on the South Coast. It’s one of Samoa’s best beaches and the kind of Utopian hideaway we all dream about.

2

© Vanuatu Tourism

2 / FRIENDLY ISLANDS OF TONGA If you have a sense of adventure and are looking for a real ‘back to basics’ island experience then Tonga is a place you should consider. The pace is slow and an adventurous spirit about life exists. The beautiful islands are dotted with natural harbours, secluded coves and countless isolated beaches. So how about you let go of the remote, and GO somewhere remote! For those who like to explore we recommend experiencing these islands by sailboat or kayak.

© Niue Tourism

5 / BREATHTAKINGLY UNIQUE NIUE Imagine a coral atoll where the year-round daytime temperature varies from 27°C to 30°C, where people are friendly, adventure activities are amazing, there’s no air pollution, phone numbers have only four digits and the New Zealand dollar is the official currency. Welcome to Niue the largest raised coral atoll in the world and one of the smallest countries on earth. We recommend travelling to Niue from July-October because that’s when the Humpback whales arrive to nurse their young. Niue is one of only a handful of places in the world where you are allowed to swim with whales – and let’s be honest whales trump everything!

© Norfolk Island Tourism

4 / NORFOLK ISLAND FOR NATURE LOVERS At only 8 kilometres by 5 kilometres Norfolk Island might be small in size, but it packs a huge amount of attractions. Outstanding sunsets exist by night and by day, nature-lovers make a beeline for One Hundred Acres Reserve, replete in tall ferns, frigate birds and magnificent fig trees while bush walkers are rewarded with stunning costal views. We recommend Emily Bay as a sublime beach spot - a beautiful mix of gold sand and emerald sea, with the added bonus of giant turtles that often visit.

© New Caledonia Tourism

6 / TASTE OF FRANCE IN NEW CALEDONIA

© Norfolk Island Tourism

Vive la difference with New Caledonia! A land of contrast, splendour and excitement, you’ll find it all here. Unspoilt beaches, the bright lights of nightclubs, casinos and the magnificent cuisine will ensure you enjoy your ‘French’ experience. New Caledonia is only a 2 and half hour flight from New Zealand so it’s the perfect excuse for a long weekend away. If you would rather explore at your own pace we recommend hitting the road as one of the best ways to really experience New Caledonia’s beautiful and diverse ‘Grand Terre’. It’s easy to pick up a rental car at the International airport and the islands well-maintained roads and signage make road tripping a breeze. It takes about eight hours to drive from end to end – just be sure to remember to drive on the right-hand side of the road.

Experience Holidays The Pacific Islands have diverse landscapes, pristine beaches and aquatic playgrounds aligned with a variety of resorts and accommodation. There’s no doubt we can tailor your tropical getaway to suit your needs and wants. From off the beaten track packages, island hopping, diving excursions, volcano exploring, sea kayaking adventures and more we can create an experience holiday perfect for you.

Authentic Samoa Stay in a Traditional Fale In Samoan, the word for family is ‘aiga’. This special word refers to not only your immediate family, but also entire clans and communities, in keeping with the warm, welcoming vibe of Samoan culture. If you are after a true taste of Samoa and keen to have more of an authentic holiday experience we suggest you live like a local and opt to stay in one of the many beach fales dotted around the coastline. They are mostly on village land and usually family-operated and enjoy some of Samoa’s most scenic vistas and million-dollar scenery. That means you get to sleep right on the beach under a thatched roof on wooden posts, and let the gentle lapping of waves lull you to sleep. There is no power, no private facilities and no room service, but there are stunning beachfront locations, unimpeded ocean views and unbeatable R&R. Package Inclusions: 3 nights accommodation in a Beachfront Fale at Tanu Beach Fale’s, Savai’i with tropical breakfast and dinner daily, return ferry transfers from Upolu to Savai’i, return coach transfers in Savai’i.

Calling all History Lovers Norfolk Island

© Norfolk Island Tourism

Norfolk Island was selected as an ideal penal colony thanks to its remoteness and economic potential. The first settlers arrived in 1788 and set about building a gaol and other town facilities. The gaol and several other buildings remain today and are often said to be the best examples of all Australia’s convict sites, so much so that it has won UNESCO World Heritage status. Kingston, situated on Slaughter Bay, is the island’s main town. Many of its buildings have been restored and now house museums and galleries documenting Norfolk Island’s storied past. A couple of history tours to take the fancy are the Convict Settlement Tour, where you’ll walk through the cemetery and hear the history of interesting convict and colonial headstones, listen to stories about the houses along Quality Row and walk through the ruins of the Gaol or Night as a Convict where you can dress as a convict and join in with the Commandant for an evening of gaiety, feasting, singing and dancing. Package Inclusions: 7 nights accommodation in a One Bedroom at Aloha Apartments including return airport transfers and a half day island tour, a Convict Settlement Tour and Night as a Convict Tour.

Venture off the Beaten Track Sea Kayak Tonga

© Friendly Islands Kayak Company

The lush tropical islands of Vava’u and Ha’apai are home to Friendly Islands Kayak Company. Whilst the islands are separated by reefs or open water, they are not great paddling distances apart so there’s plenty of time to kayak the warm waters, snorkel amidst colourful coral and inside legendary marine caves, and observe the traditional way of life of the Tongan people. Your most difficult choice will be deciding on which kayak tour to do. Vava’u’s hilly terrain is perhaps more interesting and scenic and it’s relatively sheltered waters are conducive to more reliable whale sightings between July and October. However if it’s white sand beaches you’re after, there’s no shortage of these in Ha’apai. Snorkelling’s superb in both island groups, but soft corals and sizeable fish are more abundant in Ha’apai waters. There are a range of itinerary’s available including 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10 days for Vava’u or 7 and 11 days for Ha’apai with various departure dates throughout the year, so you’re sure to find something to suit. Package Inclusions: A 45 minute orientation talk, 3 day Vava’u guided kayak tour, snacks and all meals included on the kayaking days, camping equipment including tents and mattresses, quality double and single fibreglass kayaks and accessories.

Luxury Island Hopping Isle of Pines, New Caledonia Tropical island fantasies meet reality on the Isle of Pines (Ile des Pins) known as the ‘Jewel of the Pacific’, just a 20 minute flight from Noumea. This piece of paradise is only 18 kilometres long and 14 kilometres wide. Known for its pristine beauty, aqua marine lagoons, powder white sand beaches and pine tree skyline, the island offers the perfect place to rest, relax and rejuvenate. Exploring is easy – rent a car, bike or scooter and discover at your own pace. We recommend having a picnic at breath-taking Oro Bay, a pristine natural swimming pool teeming with aquatic life. Established as a convict settlement back in 1872, the history of the island is fascinating so be sure to visit the old stone ruins and historic cemetery at Ouro. Head to the spectacular limestone ‘Queens Cave’ and take a trip to the historic Vao Church which was built by convicts. With so much to see and do we recommend that you stay at least 3 nights on this stunning island.

Soft Adventure Swim with whales in Niue The first thing you need to know about humpback whales is not that they’re huge, but that they love to sing. Being up to 15 metres in length and weighing between 25 and 40 tons, they can certainly belt out a melody. Actually, it’s more like an anthem. On any whale diving excursion this is one way you’ll know if there’s a giant in the vicinity, because when a whale bursts into song, such is the magnitude of their voice, your lungs will rattle in your chest. In Niue, the whale season runs from July to October, with August and September offering the best opportunity to interact with one of the world’s largest mammals. With water visibility as clear as it is, swimming amongst these majestic behemoths offers a clarity you won’t find elsewhere. There are rules to ensure swimmers stay at least 200 metres away, but humpbacks are curious by nature, so if you get lucky and they approach of their own accord, revel in the experience and enjoy their titanic presence. Package Inclusions: 4 nights accommodation in an Ocean Room at Scenic Matavai Resort with daily tropical continental breakfast for two, 60 minutes free WiFi per day and return airport transfers. Whale Trip including snorkel gear, a short wetsuit, water, refreshments and hydrophone to listen to the whale songs while onboard. Price Guide From: $845

shores, you will be greeted by smiles and the lively ‘Talofa’ of the locals, who are ready to treat you like a treasured friend. A special and important part of Fa’a Samoa – ‘the Samoan way’ – are the traditions. Check out the song and dance such as the Siva at a unique cultural show for visitors. You’ll leave enchanted by the skill, grace and passion evident in the various dances, ranging from slow and captivating to thrilling and fast. The island’s abundance of colour is sure to leave an impression. Locals don lavalavas and formal dresses and decorate their homes, buses, fences and even rocks with bold tones. The colourful culture and welcome attitude is not all you’ll find here – Samoa is packed with natural delights like glistening turquoise lagoons, towering volcanic landscapes, blissful beaches and banyan groves, all of which offer once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for adventure or relaxation – whichever holiday type suits you. There are ten islands that make up Samoa, with Upolu (home to Apia, the nation’s capital) and Savai’i as the main two. Each island has its own unique flavour and feel – though both are equally delectable. There’s a different type of accommodation to suit every need in Samoa. No visit here is complete without spending at least one night in an open-sided, thatched beachfront fale, lulled to sleep by waves lapping the shore. If you’re splashing out, there are, of course, deluxe resorts available where you can unwind in luxury. Or if you prefer, there’s a complete range of accommodation in between. Whatever type of lodging, and however you decide to spend your time in these islands, it’s possible that you’ll leave them with more than just a tan and happy memories. Samoa… serene, spectacular and super special.

Experience Samoa Our favourite things to see and do Paddles Restaurant, Apia – Paddles is a well-established restaurant in the main township of Apia. The menu includes a display of both Samoan and Italian cuisine to tantalise the taste buds. A relaxing time is guaranteed with good company, great food and excellent service. swimming hole is fringed with lush green foliage and connected to the ocean by an underground lava tube which fills it full of crystal clear water and tropical fish. There’s a slightly nervewracking ladder leading into the trench which might daunt younger sprogs in your clan, but the older ones will love to cannonball from the steps into the lush water below.

Robert Louis Stevenson Museum – If you’re familiar with buccaneers and buried gold, you’re probably a fan of the Scottish author, Robert Louis Stevenson’s most famous novel, Treasure Island. Stevenson’s beautifully restored former residence, Villa Vailima features many of his belongings, musical instruments and family photos. Enjoy a guided tour of this grand 19th century abode.

Picture-perfect Lalomanu Beach – Hands down one of Samoa’s most good looking beaches, this is the paradise we all dream about. As part of the mainland, the ice-white sand, crystal-clear lagoon and lolloping palms have ‘come hither’ written all over them.

Afu Aau Waterfalls, Savai'i – This spectacular waterfall in South-eastern Savai’i, plunges from the rainforest deep into a fresh-water swimming pool. Access is on a dirt road which is maintained by the local village. Entrance fees are collected at the Samoan fale about 650 metres from the main road.

6

Alofaaga Blowholes, Savai'i – Experience the furore of the ocean at its most powerful at the Alofaaga Blowholes. Powered by waves, these roaring jets of water defy gravity – for a short time at least – and shoot skyward at an incredible speed and with great ferocity.

Experience

Savai’i

© Samoa Tourism; David Kirkland

For a taste of the true Samoa you must visit Savai’i, Samoa’s largest island. It's

like travelling back in time to the way Samoa was many years ago and is the cultural experience you have yearned for. With a population of 42,000 Savai’i is the third largest Polynesian island after Tahiti and is well known for its gentle traditional way of life, pristine scenery and archaeological sites. Here you can live like a local while at the same time savouring the island’s stunning natural attractions. Get high on a rainforest canopy boardwalk or if you’re a keen diver, take the opportunity to go scuba diving. Samoa boasts more than 200 types of coral so what better way to spend your time than swimming lazily through the delightfully turquoise waters. Savai’i is an island of incredible contrasts – follow the lava tube trail, or blow away the cobwebs by taking an invigorating hike around the easily accessible volcanic crater on the Tafua Peninsula. Cool off afterwards by relaxing in the shade of a palm tree on a nearby white sand beach.

Santo

Cape Cumberland

was the inspiration behind James Michener’s “Tales of the South Pacific”, giving the region an aura it’s never lost. Santo encompasses a natural beauty and still remains largely untouched and unspoilt. Champagne Beach, with its silver sand and sapphire sea, fulfils every tourist’s expectation of an island paradise. The Blue holes and underground caves are just some of the natural wonders not to be missed. Santo is a legendary destination in every way, boasting Vanuatu’s highest mountains and vast expanses of rainforest.

Santo is also a dream destination for diving enthusiasts, the main attraction being the wreck of the luxury liner SS President Coolidge, which sank just off Santo in 1942 after striking a mine. Still almost intact, the liner is considered one of the best and most accessible wreck dives in the world, you can still see guns, cannons and personal supplies left by some of the soldiers. If you want to see the whole wreck it takes around 10-15 dives due to its sheer size. A bonus for divers is that close by is the aptly named Million Dollar Point, where the American forces dumped all their surplus equipment at the end of the war. In addition to these there are many other sites to explore in this underwater playground.

Those looking to do some Scuba diving can take advantage of the fully qualified Dive Academy, and experienced divers can dive the SS Coolidge or explore spectacular dive sites available straight off shore. If you’re after a more relaxing time, lie back and read a book in a hammock, hang out and make friends at the bar, sip a cocktail by the pool or treat yourself to a traditional island massage on the beach.

Tanna

Š Vanuatu Tourism & David Kirkland

The glow emanating from Mt Yasur attracted Captain Cook to Tanna in 1774

and the classic volcano has proved a magnet for visitors to the island ever since. The pyrotechnic display at night is awe-inspiring and during the day there’s the opportunity to take a 4WD journey virtually to the rim of the world’s most accessible active volcano to view the spectacular ongoing eruptions. The ancient caves in Tanna are also something not to be missed, and people travel from all over the world to explore them. Some blue water caves have snorkel access only and some caves come with their own skeletons. Best to have an experienced guide with you to explain the history and local legends of the caves. Apart from being one of the productive islands in Vanuatu, Tanna is also one of the most traditional as custom and culture remain extremely important. In fact the island of Tanna is populated almost entirely by Melanesians. Many villages have shunned modern life, preferring to live as their ancestors have for centuries, you will see the locals in sheathes and grass skirts and they live in little thatched huts. Such a special destination, giving visitors a unique opportunity to view an ancient culture and its many colourful ceremonies.

There’s plenty to see in this beautiful corner of the world.

Niue is one of the world’s largest raised coral atolls and is home to around 1600 hospitable residents. There’s no such word as rush-hour on Niue, it’s one of the world’s safest destinations and you don’t need foreign exchange – Niue uses the Kiwi dollar. What many people don’t know is that Niue is far from tiny – it’s over four times the size of Rarotonga. A quarter of the island is clothed in pristine rainforest and almost the entire island is surrounded by 20 to 30 metre cliffs, and dramatic beautiful chasms and coves provide perfect swimming spots. Niue is also honeycombed with some of the South Pacific’s most spectacular and extensive caves. The island is encircled by a 64 kilometre coastal road so bikes are a great way to get around, although you can also hire a car. Diving and snorkelling around Niue’s coast is renowned for its water clarity and the richness of its marine life. Swimming with humpback whales (in season) is unforgettable and thanks to Niue’s deep surrounding waters, you can sip a cocktail and marvel at these awesome giants breaching just 50 metres from shore.

Scenic Matavai Resort Niue

– If you’re heading to Niue on holiday, chances are you’re the kind of person who appreciates places with a difference, and we’re sure you’ll love this one. Instead of silver sands, you’ll find sea caves, rainforest and mysterious chasms, and a world that centres around the ocean. In fact, ‘Matavai’ means eye on the water (mata - eye, vai - water), and it’s an appropriate name for this wonderful cliff top resort with its sweeping Pacific panorama. Scenic Matavai Resort Niue comprises three properties and has a wide range of room types on offer.

Deluxe Room

Both the 3-star studio apartments and the villa are located a 5 minute drive away from the main resort itself. The studios offer good value for money with magnificent ocean views. There are five duplex units, each divided into two spacious studios. Large private balconies make the most of the views and all rooms are well equipped with a kitchen for self-catering. Other on-site facilities include a freshwater swimming pool, trampoline, a BBQ area and access to a sea-track. The villa is situated adjacent to the studios and this super spacious home away from home offers all sorts of holiday options for families or groups. It has a garden setting, with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, full kitchen plus a BBQ and alfresco dining deck. The 4-star resort offers a choice of a comfortable Ocean Room, spacious Superior Room or luxurious Deluxe Room that all come with private courtyards or balconies, air conditioning and super-sized beds. The 12 new deluxe cliff top rooms recently opened in 2017. These rooms are contained in a new block and feature some subtle differences in style and comfort to the Superior rooms. The reef with its pools, breakers and intriguing sea tracks lies just below the resort, and the entire place was planned to merge unobtrusively into the unique surroundings. The resort has an excellent restaurant and two bars with live entertainment and cultural shows to keep you entertained.

NIUE ORIENTATION TOUR A not to be missed tour for an introduction to Niue for the first-time traveller or, even if you’re a repeat visitor, you’ll learn from a knowledgeable guide, a little of the history, the culture and see some of Niue’s iconic locations all in the comfort of an air conditioned mini bus.

SNORKELLING ADVENTURES Niue is renowned for its crystal clear water and richness of its marine life, so snorkelling around its coast is a must-do! Enjoy an abundance of reef fish and beautiful hard corals. If you are lucky you may even come across the resident spinner dolphins – famous for their acrobatic displays. They are playful by nature and you may just get to enjoy an in-water interaction with them. © Niue Tourism

UGA TOUR

WHALE WATCHING A must-do when in season Jul-Oct. This 4 hour trip starts with a presentation on the Humpback whales followed by 3 hours spent out at sea spotting the whales as they rest and play. If the behaviours allow you will have the opportunity for an in-water interaction for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Pre-booking is essential as tours sell out fast.

The uga or coconut crab is said to be the largest hermit crab in the world. While it spends all its adult life on land, it must return to the sea to release its eggs. The tour provides an opportunity to see and capture the uga in its natural habitat. The tour is in two parts – the first is to lay the bait during daylight hours. The second part takes place at night when the crab comes out to feed on the bait.

MISA’S NATURE TOUR Misa’s Nature Tour is an interactive experience where he guides you along a path that will showcase many unique features of Niuean history, customs and practices, many of which are still relevant today. His stories will entertain you and his knowledge about nature will leave you with an appreciation of how fragile it is on Niue island.

islands, divided into four groups, are scattered like pearls across 700,000 square kilometres of ocean. There is no shortage of deserted beaches and pristine anchorages here, and the swimming, snorkelling and diving are exceptional. The main island, Tongatapu, is home to the capital Nuku’alofa, and to most of the kingdom’s resorts. Many of these are family-owned and personal, because Tonga likes to welcome its visitors in low-key style - this is a place for simpler living and genuine encounters with the local people. With about a third of all Tonga’s population living here, Nuku’alofa can be a surprisingly bustling place but its size also means there’s a great array of restaurants, nightclubs and dynamic cultural shows.

There’s plenty to see too, such as the Talamahu Markets with its mounds of fresh produce and selection of handcrafts, including wood carving and jewellery. Although the Royal Palace is not open to visitors, you can admire this whitetimber 19th century building from the waterfront. Try to time your visit to town to include a Sunday. Tongans are ardent churchgoers and their singing is legendary. Everyone’s welcome but make sure to pack your Sunday best.
